HIROMI TANGO, Lizard Tail (Dawn)

Inspired by neuroscience in a quest to heal through art.

Hiromi Tango is a Japanese-Australian artist whose work spans sculpture, drawings, photography, installation and performance. Hiromi is dedicated to generate healing conversations through arts engagement. Tango’s sculptural performance Lizard Tail (Dawn)  is the sixth iteration of the Lizard Tail concept. It explores human interaction with the urban environment, and our constant connectivity to devices. It questions what we may be losing of ourselves in this era of being constantly connected, and always striving to analyse everything about ourselves.

Lizard Tail (Dawn)  ruminates on the mystery of those fleeting moments in the early hours, just before you awaken, and the lines between conscious and subconscious become blurred. The Lizard Tail is an accumulation of those things that are just out of the grasp of your consciousness, that you carry with you nonetheless.

Tango performed Lizard Tail (Dawn)  on Southbank Art Precinct, weaving through Melbourne’s iconic cultural landmarks and institutions, finally resting alongside ACCA, the 2018 home of Melbourne Art Fair. Melbourne Art Foundation + MLC Life Insurance Commission. Hiromi Tango is represented by Sullivan Strumpf, Australia / Singapore.

“I’m really interested in creating healing conversations through arts engagement.”

In an interview with Cellotape, which you can watch above, Hiromi Tango told us:

Fundamentally, I’m really interested in creating and generating healing conversations through arts engagement. My work is driven by the inspiration of neuroscience.

Coming back to this question of what is it to be human and how we could feel safe and comfortable and engage deeply for the mental health purpose or well being purpose.

Some of the materials I use for yarns and papers and soft materials assist prevention and management of anxiety and stress. It started from my personal background that I really wanted to take off the difficult memories, which attached in me and I felt it is beyond psychological.

Coming to Melbourne, engaging with the energy of the city and then dragging the tail, originally what I envisaged was like real darkness and that the Lizard Tail and myself were slowly waking up form our sub-consciousness and then engage with the daylight.

Moving towards the ACCA, the tail and I and the team, we all got some relief.

The light represents hope and in this dark society, and I think we all need to follow the light.
