Robert Wun: Street Style and Outer Space

Jordan Roth, Fan Bing Bing, Cardi B, and many others gathered outside the Dome Paris to attend the Robert Wun haute couture show.

Since his first showing during the official schedule, each season more followers fight to see the inventions, creations, designs, and imaginings of the London trained, Hong Kong based couturier.

This season the audience especially wore previous season’s looks and twirled for the paparazzi outside the show venue. It proved that his clothes, although so strong, do work away from the catwalk show, how the shapes, lines, curves, and proportions offer options between fluid and structured, between monochrome and colour, and between the fantasy of couture and the reality.

I love Robert Wun and this season’s collection was for me one of his strongest from the first to the last. It was obvious how excited the audience and the onlookers were before the event, and this energy and passion is because he is truly an original creative force. The heatwave failed to dampen the excitement outside the show or deter the crowds from watching and waiting. The key guests also didn’t rush into the shade or air conditioning, they paused and posed, they stopped and stood and this resulted in great street style images, as you can see from Elli’s shots.

The Cellotape magazine stories showing street style from couture prove that fashion is still a major player in the life of Paris. Also, that crowds and watchers, the “general public” can still never get enough of the glamour of fashion, and those attending the shows.

Back in the 1980’s fashion victims were hangers on without invitations and sometimes dressed in mad over the top looks, often not even inspired by the designer they were attempting to gate crash. Today those attending the show wear the designers’ clothes and the crowd are happy to watch, to snap, to shout and to observe. This means that many people are taking pictures, obviously on their phones mainly, but unlike professionals these snaps are often not great, merely a memory. Whilst on the other hand street photographers offer great shots of the wonderfully dressed attendees. It is a proper job, a proper focus and requires stamina, an eye, patience, and energy.
